Significance of National Symbols of India

The freedom struggle that India had to undergo, after two hundred years of colonial British rule, contributed quite a lot towards formation of its National symbols. The significance of these symbols can go back to those days of bitter and hard struggle.

The first symbol, which comes to my mind is the National flag. The colors signifies the basic social fabric of India. It signifies the land which was made by sacrifices by those men and women, relentlessly moving towards that singular goal, that they had.The colour of green, means the youth and the white, is for the land of peace and the saffron is for the sacrifice for the motherland. The Ashoka Chakra, at the centre of the flag, symbolizes the reign of that great king Ashoka , who converted himself from Chandashoka to Dhammashoka, after the Kalinga war. Here, I would also like to mention the great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore’s song which refers to the end of the era of the old and the beginning of the youth.

Furthermore, I would like to discuss the other National Symbols of India like the three services of India-Army, Navy and the Airforce. When we see the sky blue colour and the bird, we get reminded of the Airforce. The blue sky and the bird signify flying. We see the colour of the army men and recognize him.

Ample examples are also found in the corporate world. Post indepemdence, the motto of the corporates was to serve the nation. We see the National symbols of the Indian groups, depicting the work that they did towards development of the Nation. One such is the Tata group and the contribution, it  has made towards building the Indian youth and sports for the country. The contribution that was made towards construction of roads and the tribal welfare.

In technology and education, the Indian Institute of Technologies at Kharagpur, Kanpur and Mumbai and Madras, were all built after independence,to move the country forward in education and technology and the symbols signify that. Infact, Kharagpur IIT was built on an existing jail.

It would be incomplete, if we do not mention Swami Vivekananda and the Ramakrishna Mission and its symbol. This erudite scholar sage, who mesmerized the west by his speech and spread the Mission of Ramakrishna to the world, signifies the symbol of the Ramakrishna Mission. It also siginifies , that India is at ease with all its religion.

And of course, we are yet to speak about the symbol of the Maharaja of Air India. The funny pictures. that were drawn with the Maharjaa, which signifies again our past. The Maharajas, whose lands were taken away by the British. The Maharaja flies again and again.

We will also speak about the symbol of Amul and the dairy milk cooperatives formed in India, after independence. It was a giant step forward.for development of modern India.. We all read these advertisements with the Amul symbol, which event today integrates us to the daily happenings.

The list is endless and we cannot forget about our glorious past. Can we forget the symbol of Gandhiji’s spectacles and Netaji’s Azad Hind Force? The land was reborn with all these symbols.
